The Mortgage Department houses the Mortgage Records (mortgagor, mortgagee, UCC financing statements, and chattel mortgages) and the indexes which reflect encumbrances, representing a debt or other claim of money owed (mortgage, lien, judgement, etc.).

One of the primary functions of the Mortgage Department is issuing Mortgage Certificates. These certificates are issued under official seal and certification reflecting all mortgages and privileges against the person and property stated on the certificate.

Also, the Mortgage Department cancels Encumbrances from the Mortgage Records. After the document has the cancellation noted, it is then recorded in the Recording Department.

At the Coursey branch office, the duties of the Mortgage Department are primarily the Cancellations of Mortgages, Liens and Judgements.
